Ride into work for Friday, 31 August

With tired legs after all the rushing around yesterday, I took it easy on the way in and did a short ride.

Critical Mass should be interesting, there's a heavy rainfall warning posted but it doesn't look like it's going to be at all windy - 20km/hr isn't much at all. Should be a fun ride!

Ride into work for Thursday, 30 August

Had a hospital appointment with the surgeon this morning to get my arm checked out. Rode down to the hospital, got an X-ray done, zipped down to Ideal to swap out my saddle since it was starting to disintegrate (I've got a really impressive bruise on one cheek now!), back to the hospital to see the surgeon, back to Ideal because I was a numpty and didn't tighten the saddle bolt enough, then on to work.

The surgeon said my break is pretty much healed and it's down to muscle rebuilding now. An interesting comment he made was that he had another patient in a similar accident who had her shoulder plated rather than pinned, and I'm significantly further along in the healing process than she is - even though she's around 10 years younger than me...

Ride home for Wednesday, 29 August

With most of the traffic seemingly still stuck in town, the ride home was pretty quiet. Had fun going up Central when I found that the front derailleur was a smidgen low and the chain dropped off as I tried to move into bottom gear. A quick poke with the Philips attachment on my multitool and all was well.

Ride for Wednesday, 29 August

Rode downtown to install some RAM in a client's thin terminal to see if that would fix a Citrix problem (which I felt dubious about, since it was more likely to be the network, but that was what I was asked to do...)

Dropped my bike off at Ideal for them to have a look at my bottom bracket. Roger is back, he had a look and said he'd replace it with a cartridge bottom bracket. I headed out and did half an hour of mapping around down town before doing the RAM upgrade. I headed back and found that my bike had a new bottom bracket, but not a sealed one... My bike has Italian threading (being a Bottechia and all) so wouldn't take a standard cartridge bb, Roger swapped it out for the biggest one he had to hand for me for free and told me a new bb would cost around $60. I think I'll keep the current bb for now and when it's time to swap it out, I'll get a sealed one then.

Saw a poster for Critical Mass while I was at Ideal, I'll be attending this Friday.

Had fun riding back, the main roads were gridlocked almost constantly from Barrington all the way to Chebucto. I had no scruples about riding around the parked cars in the road and got back to the office just in time to... get changed and head home!

Ride home for Tuesday, 28 August

Found a new trail on the way home, which is in the running for "pointless trail creation"; instead of continuing along the Mainland North Linear Parkway and turning left partway along to go to the sports field, I can now instead take a trail that meanders back and forth to... the sports field. It's not an unofficial trail either, someone has put quite some work into it creating the path from chipped wood, building proper wooden bridges, and digging in pipes to run streams under the trail.

Something I've also noticed is how paranoid drivers are at the crossing on Lacewood; whereas before I've been used to having to hold my bike out in traffic to get cars to stop, vehicles are now slowing down and stopping before I even have a chance to press the walk button. I have no explanation for this, but it certainly makes a pleasant change...

My bottom bracket started creaking on the way home, so I had to take it easy - which was a bit tricky with all the hills I have to climb. I tightened it when I got home, hopefully that should do the trick...

Ride for Saturday, 25 August

Went down to IdealBikes and took some photos of bikes. Whilst I was there a guy came in looking to see if he could sell a recumbent trike. It turned out he had just completed a charity ride from Barrie in Ontario to Halifax, and was trying to see if it would be cheaper to sell the trike here and buy a new one in Barrie, or have the trike shipped back to Barrie. Dave gave him a pretty good deal and the trike was sold - I think Dave is planning on using it as his personal bike for a while, he really seemed to enjoy riding it on the test rides.

See http://triketrek.org/ for the website for the ride, or there's a crazyguy journal at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/2420. Last I heard Dave was going to drive him around for the night once the shop shut and get him settled, and then Bob was going to catch a bus home - a long trip!

Ride for Saturday, 25 August

Rode down to the Farmer's Market to do my weekly shopping.

Had a call from the police when I got back, another constable was following up on my report from last week - it sounds like the driver has now been called about this incident 3 times by 3 different officers, which is interesting. The constable told me the driver said his passenger may have "accidentally flicked his cigarette out of the window", judging by the tone of the constable's voice he believed that about as much as I did. The constable said he would follow up with the constable who filed the original report to ensure the driver's insurance company were aware of the report, and checked with me if it was OK to close the file now, which I agreed to.

I was rather surprised at how much effort was put into this, but I suppose with the number of bike cops around now the police have even more incentive to clamp down on bad driving by motor vehicle drivers.

Ride home for Wednesday, 22 August

Muppet of the day was the driver on Central Avenue reversing out of his driveway without looking. I stopped and stood there with my arms crossed waiting for him to look on my side, he didn't look at all until he was all the way out in the road. If you look at the link, the muppet pulled out across from Burton Ettinger School; even at this time of year there's plenty of children around playing on the playing fields and walking on the sidewalk home - he could quite easily have killed a child with his SUV without even realising it.

Ride for Thursday, 16 August and hit by a truck

Back from a vacation in Newfoundland, waved farewell to the parents, and now catching up on past entries...

Rode in to Bedford for a physio appointment, just after the lights at Convoy Run I had a truck driving next to me about 6 inches away. I shouted through the window for the driver to give me more space, and the passenger laughed at me and flicked his cigarette ash at me. I was so surprised I just spat it back out and the driver proceeded to veer over at me. I swerved out of the way so all he did was nudge my knee, and as I stopped he stopped about 20 metres in front of me. As soon as he saw I was getting my cellphone out, he took off - not slowly enough for me to capture his license plate (EGM 233), the model (Sonoma) and colour (a particularly ugly shade of maroon). I called 911 and got through to the RCMP, who took down my details and connected me through to the HRM police, who in turn arranged for a squad car to come over.

The officer arrived after about 15 minutes and took down my details and recorded what happened. He seemed quite angry at the driver, commenting that such behaviour was "extremely inappropriate", and that I was perfectly within my rights to be on the road. We agreed that there was insufficient evidence to warrant a ticket, but he was more than willing to call the driver and inform him exactly how dangerous his actions were and what the possible implications would be. I asked the officer if he could notify the driver's insurance company, and the officer got a gleam in his eye and said that he couldn't notify the insurance directly, but he could "file the report in such as way that the insurance company would find out, which will be a better deterrent than just a ticket anyway". The officer left with a handshake, and I got a followup call a couple of days later from the desk sergeant to confirm the details, then another call a few days after that to confirm the driver had been spoken with.

I mentioned this to the guys at IdealBikes and I was told there was a letter in The Coast, the local indie paper, about a driver threatening to hit bikers. A bit of hunting around on some private networks found it:

"This goes out to all you cyclists who insist on riding in the middle of the goddamn road: FRIG OFF. Unless you can pedal as fast as I'm allowed to drive, stay as far over to the side as you can get, or ride on the sidewalk... I don't really care which: just stop pretending to be a motor vehicle and slowing everyone else down. You're not proving a point, you're just pissing people off. Eventually, I'm gonna give into (sic) road rage and give one of you buggers a nice little love tap. Trust me, it'll hurt you a lot more than it hurts my truck. - Anonymous Asshole"

The current suspicion is that this author may be the same person who hit me. If he does it again, now he has a record, I'm sure a ton of bricks will fall on him from a great height, courtesy of the legal system.

The rest of the ride was, thankfully, uneventful.
