Ride into work for Wednesday, 07 June

Took the long route in and saw quite a few cyclists - I'm not sure if it was the fact it's Bike to Work day here in Halifax, or if it's the price of gas spiking to $1.15 or so, but it was good to see more people out on the roads. Surprisingly most of them were riding properly, with helmets, following the stream of traffic - I even saw a few with lights going, which was completely unnecessary!

Stopped off at MEC for the free pancake breakfast. The helper there was handing out the pancakes one at a time, but she looked at me and said, "hmmm, you look hungry" and gave me two, which was generous. I started cooling off fairly quickly so I ate up and headed out and circled around downtown Halifax to get back up the hill to get to work.

I was looking at the NS Motor Vehicle Act and it states that lights are required 1/2 after sunset. The actual section is easy to misunderstand:

(6) Every bicycle shall be equipped with a lighted lamp on the front thereof visible under normal atmospheric conditions from a distance of at least 100 metres in front of the bicycle and shall also be equipped with a reflex mirror or lamp on the rear exhibiting a red light visible under like conditions from a distance of at least 60 metres to the rear of such bicycle.

But: 174 (1) Except as provided in this Section, every vehicle upon a highway within this Province during the period from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise and at any other time when visibility is so limited by fog, rain, snow or other atmospheric condition or by insufficiency of light as to render not clearly discernible any person on the highway at a distance of 300 metres ahead shall be equipped with lighted head lamps and lighted rear lamps as in this Section respectively required for different classes of vehicle and subject to exemption with reference to lights on parked vehicles as declared in subsection (10).

Although at this point in the year, that is quite late in the day. I thought the legislation said that you must have working lights. But the act only says you must have a horn or bell until sundown.
