New to the blog. I like it.
At my former place of employment (in the US), they would hold a raffle for a free lunch for those who carpooled or rode their bikes (buses weren't really an option). I can't remember exactly how it worked (I always drove by myself so I never qualified). I think it happened once or twice a month. Nice idea to promote less cars on the road.

Wow, that's a nice idea!

I'm caught in a strange dichotomy at my work; the management in my office are very supportive of my biking and have provided me with access to secured storage space, etc, however the head office are very anti-bike, for some reason. Unfortunately it looks like we're going to be moving offices in a couple of months, which is going to make things interesting...

Dude,

I am loving that you are sending around emails purporting to be "legal" documents etc. "Her Majesty the Queen!"....

hahahahahaahahahah

Sweet. I don't think they reckon the force of nature you are. Well done!

Are you biking up to Cape Breton this year?

Oh, Knox, they aren't purporting to be legal documents under the authority of Queenie... They genuinely are legal documents from Lizzie's court! Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, so all the courts and government still operate (to some extent) under her authority.

I don't know if I'll be biking up to Cape Breton as, for one reason and another, we're going to be rather short on time, but I'm hoping to bike from Port aux Basques to Cornerbrook with my Dad. And we're going to have a day to do it, starting from when we get off the ferry. That should be interesting...

Anonymous #1 again...

Does you place of work pay for or offer tax free purchase parking or bus passes or anything? If they did have some sort of transit program they'd see how important it is to encourage their employees to walk, bike, or bus it. I don't know if they do this in Canada, but sometimes in the US they will offer tax free transportation, that is, you can take out the price of of a monthly bus pass (or however much you want) before the taxes are determined which in bigger cities like Chicago can add up to alot. I love Halifax and miss it dearly, but sometimes think that for all the "tradition" and "culture" and "history", we sure have a lot of growing up to do.
Keep us updated on the move when it happens.

My place of work currently has parking passes available for employees. I have access to a secure locked storage space to store my bike. My manager made an effort to have a rebate scheme put in place for people who gave up their parking pass in favour of transit or other methods, but it appears to have been stymied by the accounts department at head office.

From current rumour there's storage spaces being created at the new offices where I may be able to store my bike... I haven't been told anything official, though. There's no parking passes, either; it's first come, first served, and anyone who doesn't get there in time has to find somewhere else to park. This doesn't bode overly well for bike parking. I know another guy there who bikes in in the summer and he buys cheap department store bikes because his bikes keep getting stolen and he doesn't want to leave a decent bike there...
