Ride into work for Friday, 09 March

Late ride in as I got an early morning page again (looks like Telus are having real problems on one of their edge routers). Took the opportunity to ride around the North End/Hydrostone area to fill in a few more streets on the map.

Gas jumped up again today to 112.5 - should be interesting to see if that affects the number of cyclists on the road, and how drivers treat cyclists. Based on past experience I'm guessing there will probably be a bunch of stroppy drivers on the road over the next week or so...

Distance logged: 19.023km
Time: 58:27
Average speed: 19.5km/hr
Max speed: 53.3 km/hr
Temperature: -15C to -13C, sunny
Cumulative distance: 1500.303km
Cumulative cost per km: $0.19
Monthly distance: 216.286km
Monthly cost per km: $0.08

It would be interesting to know how many people who say they are going to bike or car pool or take the bus because of rising gas prices actually do it. We are such a car culture in North America that most people will just complain and not change their lifestyle. My favourite quote came from a guy who was interviewed in the Arizona Republic when gas prices first started their rise in Spring/Summer of 2004: "I have to smoke generic cigarettes so I can put gas in my car." - Michael Vegvary, Tempe AZ. And this was when gas was a realtively cheap $2.15/gallon.

Blimey... that's a classic!

At my office, most of the people in technical services (where I work) use public transport to get in, unless they have to go out on site or otherwise travel. I'm the only one who bikes, but others have talked about it - maybe this summer I'll see more joining me. The number of cyclists on the road certainly seems to be rising at the moment - I'm looking forward to summer to see how that turns out!

On the other hand, all the sales and management staff drive cars. I'm sure there's an interesting correlation in there somewhere...

Unfortunately riding my bike from Clayton Park to Burnside isn't realistic for me. And as someone who is freaked out by some of the drivers in Halifax as a driver myself, I'm really apprehensive to take to the streets on my bike - and I've lived here since June.

Thankfully I don't drive a whole lot - to and from work and some meetings, and sometimes out of town. A tank of gas lasts me about two weeks. But I'd love to be able to cycle more!!!
