Ride for Wednesday, 30 January

Rode down to Bedford for my doctor's appointment. Slippery ride in as the roads were right on the verge of freezing, and the fog in the air was keeping them nice and slick. Managed to get there without any incident though I felt the back end slide out and the studs bite on several corners. By the time I headed home it had warmed up a bit and the ice was mostly melted.

Went out to the airport this afternoon to look at a new gig out there. Unfortunately the non-102 route looks to be about 50km, involving going up Highway 2 almost all the way to Enfield and then doubling back on myself - I'd be interested to know of any alternate routes, since the direct 102 route is 33.9km but is mostly closed to bike traffic (and I don't think I'd want to ride it anyway). The only other alternate is via Dartmouth up towards Musquodoboit Harbour at around 100km! It looks like there's some back roads or trails that may be passable but I suspect in winter they aren't cleared...

Rode down to the farmer's market for my weekly shop. Followed RC's tip on using dish soap which worked pretty well. It didn't stop the glasses from fogging up completely, but they didn't freeze and the fog cleared reasonably quickly as soon as I started moving. I think I may experiment with a slightly larger quantity of soap.

Had to break out the chemical warmers on the way home as my fingers started to feel like frostbite was imminent. Odd since it was so warm, I can only assume my fleecy inner gloves were still damp with sweat from last night.

Critical mass ride for Friday, 25 January

Met up for Critical Mass and most of the usual faces appeared along with a surprising number of new faces (for this time of year). There was also a radio reporter there taking interviews who also came along for the ride - I think possibly the first reporter to cover the ride who did so, kudos to him for doing it on such a cold night. Around 12 people showed up in the end:



We did a route downtown and in order to try to get some heat built up rode up the multi storey car park on University Avenue by the hospital. Of course, that meant riding back down again...

Rode into Bedford for a physio appointment, and decided to take the long way back through Clayton Park as the bike lane on the Bedford Highway was thick with slush and ice. The fire trail was well ridable as the snow had melted in the rain and refrozen overnight to a relatively smooth surface. Ran into the muppets on the way through, two people carrying yappy little Yorkshire Terriers. The woman carrying her dog walked into the middle of the path and lunged over towards me and shouted "HEWWO!", confirming my theory that people with yappy little dogs are mentalists. I suspect this might have been a muppet I've encountered before, but the man she was with looked different and rather hangdog; someone with a mean streak might speculate she'd driven away the original partner and picked up someone else to pick on, but a thought like that would of course be beneath me.

Messy ride in with heavily salted roads causing ice to melt and deposit on me and my bike. Fortunately it looks like we're about to get a streak of sub -10C weather, which should keep the salt down a bit.

The flip side is the ride back was pretty fast in comparison, although I had to take a short route in as I had to go to the data centre to check on a new server hardware install. I made the interesting discovery that it takes 3 minutes by bike to go from the Abbie Lane building to the car park by the Bethune building - I suspect it could be quicker as (ironically enough) I caught up with, then got stuck behind the shuttle bus from Camp Hill to VG.

It had been snowing for a couple of hours when I left, just enough to start sticking. There was very little traffic around, I suspect a lot of people left early scared of the snow (we're forecast to get 15-20cm by tomorrow morning), although I saw several cyclists. I took the short route home straight down Bayers, which was fine apart from the sleet hitting me at 40km/hr feeling like a facial acupuncture. Saw two cyclists ahead of me riding up Central, too - something I've never seen before!

Took the fire trail on the way home just to see if it was any better. The thin layer of snow was just enough to cushion out the ruts, and there were very few tracks so it wasn't too bad.

Took my bike in at lunch as there was a grinding noise coming from the rear wheel, possibly caused by the bodge job I did to get the axle from my old hub to fit the axle on the new wheel. Mike checked it out and readjusted the axle and repacked the wheel but couldn't find anything obvious, since it's still going on I guess it's probably the bottom bracket that's on its way out - it's about time it was replaced anyway.

Went to the Halifax Cycle Coalition board meeting after work where we tried to figure out what needs to be done to get off the ground. Finally got out of there around 9, the worst of the rain had eased off but it was still fairly nasty out - especially with rivers of water on the roads.

The continuing warm weather and melting snowbanks made it foggy and misty out, with water continually condensing on my glasses and mirror. The long term forecast is showing this weather will continue all the way through into next week - at this rate I'll be able to get my road bikes out...

Rode down to the Farmer's Market to do my weekly shopping. Before I left I noted my rear rim was starting to look rather worn and resolved to pick up a new rim next week. On my way back, I started feeling a bump from the rear and suspected it was a broken spoke, but when I pulled over to check I found the rim had actually split - a nice 2 inch long gash in the rim, with 8km still to go to get home. I put the heavy panniers on the front wheels and the light ones on the back, and did a quick fiddle with the brake cable to let it out so the brake pad wouldn't catch on the gash. I limped home, risking the bumpy firetrail rather than riding on the road so I could ride more slowly - which was in itself risky as the heavy front-end kept trying to bury itself in the snow on the trail. I managed to get home without incident and went down to IdealBikes where Mike had promised me he had a 36 hole DM18 rim in stock for me. Unfortunately... it turned out to be a 32H and Mike cursed the lack of labelling done by a certain junior member of staff. Mike went digging in the basement and found a complete wheel that was missing an axle and housing and said I could have that, and only charged me for the rim. I managed to cobble together an axle and housing that just about fit and spent the weekend rebuilding the wheel to a high tension and replacing all the other worn components on my bike (brake pads, chain and one of the sprockets).

Cold ride in. I also got to be witness to a crash; I was going down Lacewood and saw a driver ahead coming towards me signalling to turn into Glenforest who stopped at the turning to wait for me. A few seconds behind her, a red car came up in the same lane, left it to the last second to swerve to the right-hand lane in what looked like a "teaching her a lesson to be in my way" fashion, then as he passed tried to swerve back into the left lane. Unfortunately he completely cocked it up and appear to bounce off the snowbank to the right, the front left of his car hit the front right of the woman driver's car, and he went spinning off in a haze of brake smoke. I stopped and saw the woman pull off into Glenforest OK, and the red car had stopped, and the people at the bus stop were making comments like "oooh, did you see that, he just drove straight into her" so there were plenty of witnesses and, not wishing to hang around in -17C weather with only a jersey and windbreaker on I continued into work.

Just for fun I later calculated wind chill factor from my average and maximum speeds; -27C and -32C, respectively. All rather irrelevant since I didn't have any flesh exposed to the wind, but amusing nevertheless.

Cold ride in, I wore ski goggles for the first time this year but I overheated as soon as I got down the hill through Fairview and the temperature jumped. I ended up taking them off and swapping them for regular glasses. Otherwise I was fine with 3 layers on top (thermal jersey, winter weight jersey and windbreaker) until around 2km from work, when I started overheating again. When I got to work I found all the sweat had run off my forehead and frozen on my eyebrows, which I supposed at least kept it out of my eyes...

More snow on the way home with lots of wind, I lucked out and got a tailwind on most of the uphills though. Most of the side roads still haven't been particularly well cleared, and since the forecast is -14C overnight it's going to suck tomorrow morning when it's frozen - just in time for the first day of school. With any luck this first day of school won't be quite as eventful as the first day of school last term...

Ride into work for Wednesday, 02 January

Snow overnight followed by rain led to a slushy start to the day, compounded by my street not being cleared. I gave up and walked my bike to the end of the road where (luckily) it was all clear. I rode in to Bedford for a physio appointment, then back home to pick up my laptop and other gear, then down to the hospital. The back roads were pretty messy all the way through, but once I had the back end well loaded with all my gear in the panniers I was good to go. The 30-40km/hr winds didn't help too much, though...
