Muppet of the day was the driver who tried to overtake me as I was stopped at an intersection with another car coming at me. Needless to say the oncoming driver was not impressed by a muppet swinging out into his lane for no apparent reason. Said muppet overtook me at the first opportunity he got, and for the next 2km was sat in front of me unable to go any faster due to the traffic in front of him going around 25km/hr on a slight downhill - ie, just about right for me. I was, however, able to see on his inch high OLED display he was listening to NELLY at 75% volume. Strangely, I was also able to hear the music from his car, too.

With the warm weather over the past couple of days most of the ice has broken up on the trails so it's no longer quite so slick. The downside is people walking through have churned up the mud on the trail and broken up what ice there is, which then all freezes again overnight and becomes extremely rutted and a pain to ride. After riding the fire trail I found that my rear brake had come all out of balance and I ended up doing a trailside repair by screwing the adjuster screw all the way in. I'm going to have to re-set the brake pads tonight when I get home, which is a bit of a pain in itself. A sign of my less favourite time of year approaching (along with autumn) - a spring of mud and rain is on its way...

Critical Mass ride for Friday, 24 February

The ride was relatively warm, -5C when I got there. We ended up with 10, just enough to fulfill the ride quota - the rule being, "if less than 10 people show up, Critical Mass is held at the pub". It was an all male ride this time around, I don't know what happened to the female contingent - especially since it was warmer this month than last month.

We went for a ride down Spring Garden, along Barrington onto Hollis, then worked our way back up and ended up riding around the Citadel before spinning back by Victoria Park to see if there were any latecomers coming for 6pm. No-one was there, so we ended up heading back to IdealBikes.Chris was there just about to head over to Victoria Park so we picked him up, then rode a circuitous route to Dave's place on Windsor, where a keg party was going on at his house. I didn't stay too long (since I had a 2am page and was starting to feel really tired) so I headed home before too long.

Oddest thing I saw was what looked like a woman carrying a baby riding a bike as I rode up Main Avenue. As I got closer I could see she was actually carrying a sack of potatoes in one arm - and it looked like a fairly sizable bag, too, at least 5 kilos!

Rode home with the Treo connected to the GPS, it worked but I'm not convinced the connector is the greatest as it relied on 3 elastic band to keep it in place - not exactly a professional solution.

Had something making a funny banging noise in my front fork, it sounded like the magnet for my bike computer had gone out of whack and was hitting the sensor. I stopped a couple of times but couldn't see anything. When I got home I had a close look, it turned out to be a tiny rock caught between a couple of the knobs in the tyre that was intermittently hitting the fork.

Finally got my warbiking setup all back up and running after the fiasco with the dodgy cables. Disassembling the plug, desoldering the cables (with around 4 strands of wire apiece!), then resoldering with half-decent hookup wire and lashings of heat shrink seems to have done the trick. And if it fails again with the serial connector, at least I know serial connectors and I just need to hack up on of the multitude of cables I have kicking around (I can see a serial mouse from here...) and I can ix that up. I should also be able to do a similar job with the Treo connector, once I get some more hookup wire...

Dropped my bike off at IdealBikes at lunch as I noticed my rear wheel was a bit wobbly when I got into work, and 5th and 6th gear were slipping a bit (even though it's a new chain and cassette). Dan was working on it when I got there after work, but when I took it out it was still slipping. He tried several different sized spacers and cogs before finding one that fit just right - I guess the mixture of cogs from different cassettes (I now have cogs on there from 4 different cassettes!) threw off the alignment a bit so the top gears weren't locked in quite right.

After I said "good morning" to her as I passed she shook herself and said "oh, hello!" as if I'd just woken her up or something. At least someone was having a good start to the day!

Checked the GPS when I got home, the ground cable snapped in the connector pin right in the plug. I decided to resolder it together, and when I disassembled the GPS plug to check the pinouts found that there was a dry solder joint on the ground pin there. I soldered everything together as carefully as possible, but the solder joint still snapped. Resoldering it back onto the pad got nothing, so I think it's a goner - and it's too expensive to ship back to Hong Kong for it to be worth doing a warranty replacement anyway!

Muppet of the day was the guy who kept trying to overtake me going through Quinpool Road car park but had to keep stopping for the speed bumps. He was then stopped at the exit due to a truck reversing in. There was plenty of space for me, so I just rode around (even though he drove at me to try to cut me off) and continued up to the traffic lights. I stopped there, and the muppet decided to unburden himself on me with comments like "you're not allowed to pass me, I'm a vehicle", "you're not allowed to pass on the inside because I can go faster than you" and "you're not allowed to overtake me because I'm faster than you". As the muppet obviously had issues with me being able to go faster than him even though I was fully loaded, I took pleasure in commenting how slow his vehicle was going. He then complained that he had no idea which way I was going (even though I was in the left turn only lane) and I was in the wrong lane because "bicycles are supposed to be next to the kerb". I then asked him why he'd decided to park next to me, and he rolled his window up. Unfortunately I believe I may have scratched his paintwork with my studded tyre when I was going through the lights, and he tried to pass me. What a shame...

I think he had a small penis, too.

Rode down to the Farmer's Market. Bit of a nasty ride down there with freezing rain leaving slick ice on the road. I decided to lock my bike outside the market instead of leaving it at the office and walking down there and freezing. Stopped off at IdealBikes to get a coffee from the coffee shop next door. By the time I was done and headed back the freezing rain was done and the rise in temperature melted the ice. Bit of a messy ride home, but at least it wasn't slippery.

With the temperature warming up I wore less than I have been, just a pair of legwarmers underneath my rainpants. The forecast for tomorrow is for rain! Seems like the weird weather is back again for a while.

Saw a guy riding his bike this morning, with a young teenager of about 14 or so around 50 metres behind studiously riding his bike along no hands with an "I'm not with this guy" expression on his face. If only they didn't look so alike he would have pulled it off perfectly!
